Conceptual and theoretical aspects of the program

Interdisciplinary reflection on processes of the contemporary artistic environment will constitute the scholarly component of the Biennial.

Topics for discussion

1. Art in light of history: from the classics to postmodernity
  • 'Locus of art': the question 'What is art?' today
  • Art in the structures of common nature
  • 'Historical memory' of art: culture archaeology
  • The Past and the Present of the catharsis theory of art
  • Catastrophe as a form of artistic praxis
2. Constants of art: the destiny of contemporary aesthetics
  • Morphology of art: new vision
  • The 'framework of art' conceptions in classical and non-classical aesthetics
  • Medial mechanisms of art: the status of art as mediator
  • Aesthetics in the paradigm of the Present
  • Meta-languages of art: classical heritage and the Present
3. Phenomenology of the canvas: between presence and disappearance
  • History of the canvas: symbolic figures of mimesis
  • Formal experiment and the 'formless' in art
  • Authenticity and reproduction: the Past and the Present
  • Canvas as a memory of body
  • 'Space of canvas' and 'space of sense': parameters of historical dynamics
4. Phenomenology of the artist: effort and sense
  • 'Expressive' and 'conceptual' principles of creativity: the Past and Present
  • Classical and non-classical art vitalism: transformations of the body of art
  • Psychophysiology of art: parameters of present-day experience
  • Axiology of gesture: anti-mimetic principle of art
5. Phenomenology of perception: freedom and convention
  • Sacred experience and artistic reception
  • Reception of classical and non-classical art
  • Figures of preterition: 'shameful' and 'forbidden' in the reception of contemporary art
  • Synesthesia in the present-day experience of artistic sensitivity
  • Trauma and shock mechanisms in the present-day receptivity of artists
6. Phenomenology of environment: from and location
  • Environmental parameters: structures of the 'world of art'
  • Environment and convention: regressive experience in the 'world of art' dynamics
  • Communicative functions of the contemporary artistic environment
  • Environmental aesthetics: reflections on the elusive
  • 'Odd place' as the place of art: the absurdist experience of artistic praxis

The issues addressed and the final program, consisting of sessions and round-tables for exploring the theoretical and conceptual components, will be shaped and determined by the applications and proposals received.

The Biennial Celebration will integrate the various theoretical disputes into the space of the contemporary artistic environment. The program of the Biennial will include:

  • Open lectures [prepared presentations]
  • Thematical seminars [prepared presentations]
  • Presentation ofcurator projects [prepared presentations]
  • Roundtable discussions [free discussion]
  • Reviewing and judging (expert examination, critique) competitive projects [free discussion]

Art and culture researchers, museologists, sociologists, philosophers and other specialists interested in problems related to the functioning of contemporary culture, as well as representatives of different artistic institutions (artists, curators, museum workers, gallerists, art criticians and reviewers, teachers) who are willing to discuss their working experience are welcome to participate in the Biennial Celebration.
